Understanding Concepts of Humor - 1501 Words

A good way that people describe a society would have to be through satirical devices. Voltaire is one of those many authors that use humor through his book, Candide, in order to make fun of his society. This is satirical books depicts many different topics in a society. To begin with in the book Candide, the main character goes through a series of adventures and murders in order to preserve his love to Cunegonde. Then again Candide can’t go through all of this without his partner D.r Pangloss from the beginning of the book. Dr. Pangloss was a very intellectual man that tries to help Candide by spreading his wisdom through his journey. On the other hand there are intellectuals that go beyond this point of view and see life in many other different perspectives that not everyone has the capability of seeing. A man with the brains like Albert Einstein can have the most interesting thoughts about life, and his thoughts seem to have meaning and thought behind his statements. For instance to a person art is created willingly however Einstein takes this to the next level by saying that if he where an artist he would, †¦ draw freely upon [his] imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world(Search). This sounds like words that intellectuals would say because although art is just a simple form of expressing emotions or imagination, Einstein compares imagination to knowledge, in which he also compares knowledge to the world. This sort of smart talk is mostly seen between intellectuals and so intellectuals have this belief that intellects is superior to will in any situation (Intellectualism). Like Albert Einstein, Voltaire has a similar belief when he is writing hi s book Candide. Throughout the book Voltaire has shown this sort of intellectual talk through several of his characters.
